Why are traditional dentures not the best?
Anyone who has worn conventional dentures in the past understands the struggle. Over time, dentures can become unstable, making it challenging to speak and chew confidently. Poorly fitting dentures cause movements or slippage, which causes sore spots. Â
Among all types of dentures, lower dentures tend to be the most problematic. Upper dentures benefit from suction against the palate for added stability. Lower dentures rest solely on the gums and rely on the jaw shape and muscle control to stay in place. Besides, the tongue and lower jaw move constantly, making it difficult for traditional lower dentures to remain secure. Although you can stabilize lower dentures with adhesives or pastes, it can be inconvenient and messy.
Real Patients. Real Smiles.
What are full-arch dental implants?
Dental implants can help overcome the flaws of traditional dentures. Our office offers the following full-arch dental implant options.
- Full arch removable implant dentures (overdentures)
We can improve your denture experience by incorporating dental implants in your restoration. We can secure your lower denture with as little as two implants, dramatically improving stability while still being removable. The removable denture snaps onto implants using attachments like locator abutments, providing better stability than traditional dentures.
Although overdentures are common for lower dentures, we can use them for upper dentures. However, you’ll require more implants (typically 4-6) because the alveolar bone in the upper jaw isn’t as hard as that of the lower jaw.
- Full-arch fixed implant dentures
This option is excellent for patients who want a permanent, non-removable solution that feels and functions like natural teeth. The prosthetic tooth (denture) is permanently attached to 4-6 implants strategically placed in the jawbone.
Fixed implant dentures provide maximum stability, allowing for a stronger bite force and better chewing efficiency. They require routine dental visits for professional cleanings, but daily care is similar to natural teeth.
- Individual dental implants
Some patients may want an implant for every lost tooth. This option requires more than eight implants with separate abutments and crowns. We don’t recommend this option because it’s costly, requires bone grafting, and prolongs recovery time because of multiple surgeries.
What are the benefits of full-arch dental implants?
