Healthy gums are essential to a healthy smile as they help support your teeth and protect your tooth roots. Gum problems like periodontal disease can cause your gums to recede and pull away from your teeth, putting you at risk of tooth loss. Gum recession can also expose your tooth roots, leading to tooth sensitivity. To address this problem, Dr. Amer Atassi from Acura Dental Implants & Periodontics in Darien, Illinois, may recommend gum grafting treatment. This entails taking gum tissue from another area of your mouth and grafting it onto your gums to help restore your gum health.Â
Although gum grafting is an effective gum recession treatment, it can take time to fully recover from this surgery. Below, Dr. Atassi offers five tips to expedite your healing and have a smooth, successful recovery:
Gum swelling, discomfort, and soreness are normal after gum grafting surgery. Ice packs and pain medication can help manage these symptoms. Reducing swelling will help minimize your discomfort and promote quicker healing. Dr. Atassi may recommend taking anti-inflammatory medication for this purpose.
Take time to rest after your grafting procedure to help your body heal. Ideally, it’s best to refrain from strenuous exercise and activities for 2 – 3 days post-surgery. Resting expedites your healing and will contribute to the success of your treatment. Most people are back to normal within a few weeks, although full healing can take from 3 – 6 months, depending on the complexity of your treatment.

Can you eat after a gum graft? Dr. Atassi recommends a liquid diet for the first few days after your surgery. Then you can add soft food like yogurt, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, etc., that require minimal chewing. Keep in mind your gums will be sensitive at this time. Blended soups, smoothies, and other soft food will keep you nourished while your gums heal. Avoid hot, cold, and spicy food.
You can brush gently to keep your mouth clean, but avoid the grafting site until it heals. Avoid rinsing your mouth for 24 hours after your procedure. Afterward, you can add warm saltwater rinses to your oral hygiene routine to keep bacteria at bay and avoid infection.
Tobacco products and alcoholic beverages will irritate your gum tissues in their sensitive state, impeding your healing. It’s best to stop smoking and drinking for the first two weeks after your surgery to avoid problems with your recovery. In fact, we highly recommend quitting smoking altogether as it’s a deterrent to good gum health.
